Some years are just too much. 2024 has been one of those years. There has been so much white noise online, through television– everywhere. Even with the election in the rearview mirror, there’s still a troubling amount of noise and pressure threatening to sour the mood for what should be the most joyful, relaxing time of the year.
I refuse to let the noise get in the way at this time of the year. I want to break bread with my friends and family. I want to eat way too much apple pie, too many cookies, and too many left-over ham sammiches. I want to check out of work for a few days, turn off social media, and recall old stories with my friends and family.
Technology can be your friend through the holidays– just don’t become a slave to it. If you have some shopping to do, take a peek at your emails, click a link or two, make a purchase and get on with your day. Cyber shopping doesn’t have to be time consuming. That’s the whole appeal, right? Speed, convenience, ease?
Take advantage of technology to take care of your holiday shopping. Take some time to shop local for unique items produced in your region by your neighbors. But do not forsake the opportunity to get outside on the weekends and any days off you might have during this season.
Take a trip to the shooting range, find a hiking trail, fire up your atv or off-road vehicle and take a cruise through the woods, hit the slopes or an alpine trail– do something, anything outside. Now the timing of this blog entry does coincide with Black Friday, but the intent is for the whole season, moreover to get outside and do something all year long.
The immediate reasons are stated above, but an underlying basis for getting outside is to battle against atrophy. I say this as I approach the half century mark. I can feel my joints developing some pain at this stage of life, but knowing that easing into a more sedentary lifestyle is a recipe for more pain, I get out and either work outside or engage in outdoor recreation as often as I can.
What better time of the year to burn off some of those extra pie and cookie calories than now?
Don’t take your time for granted. Stay active. Keep moving, even if it hurts. Get outside and enjoy your airguns, whether they are new or old.
Happy Holidays and Happy Shooting!
