Winter is gonna winter. Here in the northern hemisphere that means cooler weather for all of us and some of us get blessed (blasted?) with the powdery precipitation more commonly called snow.
While Umarex is in the south, we are not so far south as to be exempt from snowfall altogether. When it happens here we call off school, leave work early and raid the grocery store on the way home for bread and milk. It’s pandemonium– and that is before the snow falls. Once the fluffy stuff starts falling it gets really sporty out and about. And by sporty, I mean your drive can either be thrilling or fatal. Maybe both. 99% of us can’t drive on snow. 110% of us can’t drive on ice and that is what we get a lot more than we get snow.
At any rate, whether you are getting hit with lake effect snow up north or a blinding blizzard in the midwest or a light dusting here in the south, getting hemmed up inside the house is just a fact of life for us who live 34 or more degrees north of the equator.
So what is the hapless airgunner to do this year when snowed in? Here’s some suggestions.
Clean your guns!
No, don’t just wipe them down, but remove the stocks and take apart serviceable parts for a good deep clean. You have plenty of time for this. Clean off the kitchen table, lay down an old towel (OLD being the operative word) and get all your cleaning gear and screw drivers at the ready and get to work. Pick up our RWS cleaning kits to help with this task. These are available in either .177 or .22 caliber and both are extremely durable and thorough kits!
Make Targets
This is an inside-the-house scavenger hunt activity. Cardboard, paper, posterboards, and some markers are all you need. In the absence of a marker, you can use some paint and a paintbrush. If your printer has ink and you use it, go that route. Your kids or wife’s craft room is a good place to grab some of these supplies. Get creative or keep it simple but stack them up and store them where you can grab them when it is time to hit the range. Do you have some wood and tools in your garage? Fab up a pellet backstop with some scrap lumber. A good backstop is an essential item, but it will wear out after a while, and usually when you are right in the middle of shooting. Plan ahead and build a spare now!
Read the Umarex Blog!
Hey, the power isn’t out (hopefully!). You should dig into the wealth of knowledge and wit of the masterful author Umarex employed for this task. I know the guy well! Sort of a dumber and less verbose version of William Faulkner combined with much less traveled and less pickled-liver Ernest Hemingway. Every once in a while he might even report some useful information to you even if you don’t find his prose all that appealing. Our blog goes way back– even before the uneducated hillbilly they hired to write started working there, so there is plenty of content to pick from. Dive in!
Stock up on Ammo and Accessories
Even if the delivery trucks aren’t moving, they will eventually get to your house. Stock up on plenty of ammo for your favorite airguns. The biggest party foul when those warm spring days come around is to run out of ammo or CO2. Get out ahead of your need and order some ammo whilst you ain’t got nothing better to do.
Watch Umarex Airguns on YouTube
Of course there’s plenty to see on Umarex Airgun’s official YouTube channel but there’s so many great content creators out there. Be sure to tune in Airgun Detectives as he films from sunny San Diego, California. He reviews everything and does a very thorough, fair job of doing so on his channel. We swear, you’ll love John, the Airgun Detective. Then there’s The Dollar Sportsman, himself, Noor. Noor is based out of central Utah and makes all sorts of outdoors content, not just airguns. That said, whatever you watch on his channel, it will be well worth your while. Another entertaining creator you should watch out for is Cafes and Campfires. This channel doesn’t post prolifically, but when Chris does post, it is highly entertaining and profound. Chris hunts Texas and elsewhere. You definitely want to see some of his videos!
