It seems these days that if there is a crowded market in the outdoors space, it is the optical segment. A consumer has never had the choice of some many different optics of such high quality for less money as there is today. This, obviously, was not the case in the not-so-distant past. It used to be a hard and fast rule that with optics, you get what you pay for. A higher price tag netted superior glass with coatings that worked to minimize distortion, mirage, color accuracy, resolution, and transmission. While that is still true for higher-end optics produced by some really prestigious names, there has been some truly remarkable progress in optical bang-for-your-buck by what might be called "lower-tier" manufacturers.

When you are dealing with mechanical things it is nearly a universal truth that the item will need to be broken in for optimal performance. Brand new parts that are interacting with other brand new parts need to get to know one another, so to speak, before working their best together. This concept used to be commonly known. One would never buy a new device and immediately go out and use the device to its maximum potential or without performing needed maintenance on it at a prescribed interval. When it comes to airguns and particularly break barrel type airguns, break in is something that does need to happen in order for you to get consistent results.

I know it is May. It’s May and we are in the neighborhood of 6 months away from deer season. That being the case, and you being the kind of outdoorsman that like to get his gear in order well before you need it, it would be a nice time to let you know that the Hammer Carbine is here and it is all that and a bag of chips.

About 110,000,000 people have been born in the US in the last 25 years. I’ve heard that using statistics and figures is a good attention getting technique in public speaking and essay writing. However, I cannot correlate that sum with any pertinent fact in regard to airgunning. Now that I have your attention (or don’t– whatever) I need to lay down the logic on why you need an airgun in 2024.

How do you like to measure power? For me it depends on what you are talking about. If we are talking about lightbulbs, watts or watt equivalent will let me know how much light output to expect from that bulb. If it is an internal combustion engine, then horsepower and torque help tell the story for me. But when it comes to guns, from firearms to airguns, there are two common ways to describe power output and, depending on where you are from, one might be more common than the other.

Spring and Gas Piston air rifles need very little in the way of maintenance. The most important thing is to keep the exterior metal surfaces clean and oiled. This will help prevent rust and staining from the oils and acids in your skin. Don’t over-apply this oil as too much oil can damage wood stock...

Spring and Gas Piston air rifles generate two distinct recoil impulses during a shot. The first one occurs before the pellet starts moving and the spring or gas ram has been released by the trigger. The piston assembly moves forward rapidly and compresses the air inside of the cylinder, creating the air charge that launches the pellet.

Springers, including Gas-Piston Air Rifles, are unique in the shooting world. They operate by releasing a spring that is capped with a piston and seal. This assembly instantly compresses the volume of air that is resting in the piston cylinder. This whole process happens very quickly but with a little practice you can become aware of the distinctive two-way impulse. The first impulse comes from the release of the spring and piston assembly.

Spring is right around the corner and not a moment too soon. Granted, here in the South we didn’t have all that hard of a winter.  Yes, in spite of my chin whiskers, winter is not my favorite season– even if it is a mild winter. We’ve had our first taste of spring already.  Actually, we’ve had two waves of spring.  Down here we call them the “Fool’s Spring and the “Spring of Deception”.
